I had a fascinating conversation recently with a former coachee that stopped me in my tracks. She was absolutely thrilled about her new manager, and not just because they were getting along well. This manager had done something revolutionary - she'd actually made time for proper career development conversations. And, through these conversations, my coachee discovered that her organisation had a talent development framework. A framework that had existed throughout her entire 6-year tenure, but she'd never known about it. Reader, I was geschockethed but not really, if i'm honest... For her, it was great news. Finally, after all this time, she had something tangible to hang her career aspirations on. She could see possibilities she hadn't seen before, and her energy levels had shot through the roof. All because one manager took the time to have meaningful career conversations and share existing resources. So many questions come to mind: 🟠 How does a development framework stay hidden from the very people it's designed to help? 🟠 What other career development tools are sitting unused in organisations? Here's something you can do this week: Take 15 minutes to explore your organisation's intranet or HR portal. Look specifically for any mention of career development frameworks, talent tracks or progression pathways. If you find something interesting, book a conversation with your manager about it. If you can't find anything, that's valuable information too — maybe it's time to start asking some questions about what support is available. If you're the manager, consider this: when was the last time you shared information about career development resources with your team? Maybe it's time for a team meeting specifically about what's available and how to access it and if there's nothing available, how can you remedy that? Hit reply and let me know - I'd love to hear your experiences. See you soon, Sarah _____________________________________________________ Reader, if this got you thinking - whether about how to succeed in your own career or how to support others doing the same - I'd love to stay in touch. I'm feeling like a little squirrel as I write this, gathering my nuts, trying to capture all my snippets of information like podcasts, tools and articles in some kind of mega receptacle so I can keep track of everything. Organisation is not my strong suit, so right now many of my nuts are shoved into my little cheeks. I'm determined to find some good spots to hide them and become more organised once and for all this year. But this edition isn't about my organisational challenges. It's about...
I've always loved the idea of skinning a cat many different ways — not because I'm some kind of psycho but because I can only really think of one way to do it, so it amuses me that the phrase means that there are several ways to do something. I looked up the origins of this delightful idiom, and found some even more horrifying ways of saying that very same thing and suffice it to say, it has its roots in the 1600s when language (and possibly even practice) was often more barbaric than we...
Helping employees with wellbeing is a hot topic in the workplace these days. Some organisations do it excellently, some less so and some not really much at all. So let's look at 27 ways to improve wellbeing in the workplace. I should state, at this point, that I am not a medical doctor so please feel free to ignore my advice (not medical advice, of course!). The first one is for you, and this list is for life outside the workplace too. Sleep hygiene Optimal nutrition Movement Correct hormone...
